How it reads
When to Use Italic Over Bold
Bold pulls the eye toward a word; italic shifts its tone instead. It works well for a quote inside a post, a caption underneath a photo, or a phrase you want to read as an aside rather than a headline. Because it is slanted rather than thickened, italic also stays fairly legible even in longer phrases, more so than heavier styles like gothic.
Sans-serif italic looks closer to a modern system font tilted sideways, while the standard italic style keeps a slightly more traditional letterform. Bold italic and sans-serif bold italic combine both effects when you want emphasis and a slant together.
